Data is quickly becoming the key deliverable in scientific publishing and its volume and complexity are growing exponentially. Only a fraction of scientific data, however, is ever published, and the majority of published data are not findable, accessible, reusable or interoperable (FAIR). As a consequence, some estimates suggest that up to 80% of data may be lost irreversibly within 20 years, diminishing its potential for accelerating science.
